The Temple of Edfu is very dramatic. It is dedicated to Horus and was built in Greco Roman times. Horus was the god of the sky whose eyes were the sun and the moon. He became equated with the king, and therefore the King was Horus manifest.
Edfu is famous for the Temple of Horus which is the best preserved ancient temple in Egypt and the second largest after the Temple of Karnak.
The temple was built during the six reigns of the Ptolemies on the sight of the great battle between Horus and Seth. Horus was the falcon headed god.
The main building includes the Hypostyle Hall. Here, there are numerous reliefs, which are mostly situated on the inside of the first pylon.
Chamber of the Nile
The facade of the first hypostyle hall consists of images honoring Horus and Hathor, and there is an immaculate ten foot tall colossus of Horus.
Beyond the great hypostyle hall is a second, smaller hypostyle hall leading to a well called the "Chamber of the Nile" where the priests drew pure holy water. Beyond the second hypostyle hall is the offering hall, followed by the vestibule and finally the sanctuary.
